The topic I choose is, University of Houston parking situation. This is concerning the parking problems at the University of Houston.
This problem is a problem because there is not enough parking on or near campus for the amount of commuters that we have going to and from campus daily. We are mainly a commuter campus therefore we should have enough parking to fulfill the needs of one. This is a problem for all of the commuter students attending the University of Houston. It affects everyone that parks in the main parking lots past ten o’clock. If this parking problem is not solved then it will lead to lower attendance in classes because nobody will want to come that early in order to just find a parking spot that should be there in the first place.
The people who are able to solve this problem are those that work here at the University of Houston and are in charge of parking on campus. There are many things that can be done in order to accommodate the commuter students such as build parking garages and expanding parking lots. The problem is starting to get solved; they are building a new parking garage near the new Cullen Lofts. However one reason that it hasn’t been solved yet is because the campus is growing each year with more and more students, so this might have been a fine amount of parking for a few years ago but not anymore. Another reason why it hasn’t been solved yet is because there is limited room for them to add new parking. If you get too far away from campus it will be the same problem as waiting for a spot to open up because nobody will want to walk that far.
One way that this problem can be solved in addition to what they are doing now by making a new parking garage is to open up more of the parking lots that aren’t being used by staff to some of the students. As well as having shuttles transport students to and from some of the farther parking lots. This would make the farther away lots more appealing than waiting for 30 min for a closer parking space

Writing Assignment
Writing Assignment 10/22/09
In the Houston press article page a few titles seemed to jump out at me. The first being Burgers and Hash, I think mostly because I like to eat food and it was the first article that I saw when I opened the page. After scrolling down I began to look for other topics that seemed interesting and I noticed the section called slideshows. In this section there are all the pictures from the clubs in Houston, which was interesting. Moving on to The Daily Cougar one of the articles that interested me was the one over UH football. I don’t follow much football but since UH was doing so good this season I decided to seem somewhat interested and so it is good to know how they are doing through this article. Another article that jumped out at me was the one over our campus security. Having received many emails over the past year and a half regarding robberies and assaults on campus this is a main concern of mine and something that is nice to be kept up to date on. On the Houston Chronicle website you immediately see an article covering the major rain and flooding that we are having today. Me being a commuter this interested me because I have to deal with whatever mother nature throws at me and make the decision on whether or not I can go to class or which roads to take.
If I had to choose one of these articles in order to write a Practical Proposal paper then I would probably choose the one over campus security. It would be something that directly impacted me on a regular basis and something that I am familiar with. My research question would be something like “What can we do to improve security at UH?”
Some sources I could get information from are places such as The Daily Cougar of course, as well as the annual security report that has recently come out. I could also interview the chief of campus police in order to find out what is happening on campus and what is being done to help the matter of campus security now and in the future.
Another issue that I am exploring for this paper is something in my neighborhood. I know there are current things going on in my neighborhood such as buying a park and things like that. I spend a lot of time doing things for my neighborhood such as community service and helping out with things, so this topic would show interest for me. Another topic that I am debating over is parking at the UH campus. I am a commuter student so this would definitely effect me in a big way and not having the parking available can get very frustrating some days.
